American Family Physician (AFP)

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) publishes American Family Physician (AFP). AAFP is a peer-reviewed medical journal that covers topics relevant to Family Medicine and is published 24 times a year. More importantly, Editor Emeritus Dr. Jay Siwek, the Vice-Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, has directed the journal for the past 30 years.

In 2018, Dr. Sumi Sexton, currently Associate Professor in the department, became Editor-in-Chief. American Family Physician has upheld a partnership with Georgetown University since its establishment in 1950, signifying more than seventy years of collaboration.

In fact, the American Family Physician (AFP) is a distinguished, internationally recognized journal with a circulation surpassing 180,000. It publishes clinical review articles that emphasize a Family Medicine perspective on common clinical conditions. Furthermore, AFP provides a variety of evidence-based resources, including Cochrane for Clinicians, Medicine by the Numbers, POEMs, Point-of-Care Guides, and the Family Physicians Inquiries Network series. Moreover, the Family Physicians Inquiries Network series encompasses Help Desk Answers and Clinical Inquiries.

In addition, MEDLINE and several other indexing services index the American Family Physician. AFP’s mission is to empower family physicians to improve the health of patients and communities as the leading source of medical information. The journal provides high quality continuing medical education (CME) for family physicians and primary care clinicians awarding over 2 million credits annually.
