Primary Care Mentorship Program

The DC AHEC Primary Care Mentorship Program is an innovative program that connects students with primary care clinicians, residents, and faculty to support professional development, leadership, and exposure to health equity in practice.

The program provides mentorship opportunities across multiple training levels, including high school, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, medical, and nursing students as part of the broader DC AHEC Program. Participants engage in activities such as leadership development, primary care research, community-based learning, and clinical shadowing in underserved settings.

Program Structure

Participants in the mentorship program can expect:

  • Longitudinal mentor–mentee relationships with faculty, residents, and peers
  • Regular mentorship meetings and check-ins
  • Clinical shadowing opportunities in primary care settings
  • Participation in research, community-based learning, and health equity initiatives
  • Group sessions, workshops, and networking events throughout the program

Program Cycle

Primary Care Mentorship Program for Medical and Nursing Students

  • Applications are typically due in October of each academic year
  • Mentor–mentee matching takes place shortly after the application period closes
  • Program activities run longitudinally throughout the academic year, with ongoing mentorship, AHEC Core-topic sessions, and professional development opportunities

Pipeline Programs (ARCHES, GEP, GEMS, and Core Programs)

  • These programs follow structured summer cycles.  ARCHES, CORE, and GEP primarily operate during the summer, combining research, mentorship, and clinical exposure. GEMS and other core pipeline programs may include academic-year and summer components, with continued mentorship and enrichment activities. Because timelines vary slightly each year, prospective participants are encouraged to check the program pages regularly for updates on application cycles and program details.
  • Participants are matched with mentors and engage in program activities during their designated program period.
