Department's Family Medicine Journal

American Family Physician (AFP) is a peer-reviewed medical journal published 24 times a year, covering topics relevant to Family Medicine. It is an official publication of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and for the past 30 years has been directed by Department of Family Medicine Vice-Chair and Editor Emeritus Dr. Jay Siwek. In 2018, Dr. Sumi Sexton, currently Associate Professor in the department, became Editor-in-Chief. AFP has been affiliated with Georgetown University since 1951, a year after it started publication.

A well-regarded and internationally-known journal with a circulation of over 180,000, AFP publishes clinical review articles that demonstrate a Family Medicine perspective and approach to common clinical conditions, as well as other evidence-based resources such as Cochrane for Clinicians, Medicine by the Numbers, POEMs, Point-of-Care Guides, and the Family Physicians Inquiries Network series of Help Desk Answers and Clinical Inquiries. AFP is indexed in MEDLINE and other indexing services. AFP’s mission is to empower family physicians to improve the health of patients and communities as the leading source of medical information. The journal provides high quality continuing medical education (CME) for family physicians and primary care clinicians awarding over 2 million credits annually.
