Primary Care Scholarship Program

The new District of Columbia Area Health Education Center (AHEC), hosted by the Department of Family Medicine at Geogetown University Medical Center will be accepting applicants for its Primary Care Scholarship Program. 

Three scholarship opportunities are available:

Scholar

1. Primary Care Leadership Tuition Scholarship: Up to $15,000. During this inaugural phase, only applications from 3rd year medical students will be accepted for this award.

  • AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students, Kansas City, MO
  • GEP, ARCHES, GSP Mentor
  • Primary Care Clinical Experience at AHEC (underserved site)

2. GUSOM 3rd Year Clerkship/NHS Primary Care Scholar Award: $1,000

  • Clinical experience in Primary Care on 3rd year rotations in Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at underserved partner sites

3. Primary Care Leadership Summer Research Scholars: $4,800 (applications closed March 1)

  • MedStar Summer Research Symposium
  • AHRQ Practice-Based Research Network Annual Conference
  • HRSA Health Careers Symposium
  • Presentation during ARCHES Leadership Seminars
  • AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students, Kansas City, MO
  • Clinical Shadowing at AHEC (underserved site)
  • GEP, ARCHES, GSP Mentor

AHEC is a network leading in workforce development, health systems strengthening, community engagement and integration of primary care, behavioral health and prevention, with a focus on health equity and inclusion to improve the health of people in underserved areas. The DC AHEC program is housed in Georgetown University School of Medicine. The DC AHEC network serves with the mission of meeting health workforce needs and improving the health of the public of the District of Columbia. The program is focused on:

  1. Providing scholarships for students committed to primary care
  2. Providing mentorship by practicing primary care clinicians
  3. Providing longitudinal community-based learning and clinical experience in underserved settings
  4. Providing leadership training, research and education on health disparities and health equity
